As I mentioned here Ashlyn has become very interested in surfing and skating. For her birthday she asked for money from the grandparents so that she could save up and buy her own board. Olivia was kind enough to give Ashlyn a deck, wheels and hardware so she didn't have to buy much to complete her board.
Last week Olivia spent some time showing Ashlyn how to put together her skateboard...
I knew Ashlyn was excited to skate - she had been looking forward to this day for two months! I also knew that she was a little nervous. She planned to test out her new board and I could see that familiar uneasiness as it crept over her face. I always hoped that my kids wouldn't inherit my bad habits and qualities. Especially, my fear for failure and making mistakes. Ashlyn definitely seems to struggle with a lot of the same things that I do. Hopefully, she will be able to overcome those struggles easier than I did.

Olivia kept things light, and Ashlyn relaxed a bit...

These girls...they crack me up...

Olivia's precious little dog Charlie joined us...

Ashlyn did not let her fear keep her from trying out her new board. I continue to be impressed by how good Ashlyn's balance is considering how little skating as she has done.

Olivia is a great teacher. She is able to explain things so that Ashlyn can understand and makes her feel more comfortable. She is always really patient with Ashlyn. Plus, she is super encouraging which is helpful when Ashlyn is being critical of herself. Something that she also (unfortunately) inherited from me.

I think they had fun...

Ashlyn got a lot more comfortable as the day went on (and in a side note, she also seems to have inherited my "concentration tongue")...

Olivia (who also seems to have the "concentration tongue") showed Ashlyn some tricks...

I can't even begin to tell you how many times Ashlyn asked me show her these pictures in rapid succession so she could see Olivia's jump in action.

Ashlyn even got a chance to try out the ramp herself. Olivia and her brother, Noah, gave Ashlyn some pointers. Ashlyn held onto Olivia's hands as she practiced going down and Olivia assured her that she wouldn't let her fall. (that last line was especially for the grandmas who I know are reading this right now and having a heart attack at the thought of Ashlyn riding down a ramp on a skateboard.)

Ashlyn had so much fun. When she came home she quickly ate lunch and then ran outside and practiced the rest of the afternoon. She has practiced almost every day since she got her board. I am so proud of her!
Thank you, Olivia, for supplying the deck, for your patient instruction and for helping Ashlyn! I'm sure it won't be the last time she asks to skate with you!
