Day one of our camping trip found us with two full sized pickups piled high with camping gear, food, bikes, and two families ready to set out on an adventure.

This year we were headed to Lake Tahoe but first, this is Christy's "what did I get myself into" face…

It was a long drive and after lunch the kids crashed in the backseat.

We knew ahead of time that there were thunderstorms in the forecast and a 30% chance of rain until around 7:00pm. As we climbed higher up the mountain we quickly realized that the chance for rain was more like 100%. We pulled over and put a tarp over our gear in the back of our truck just as the downpour began.

Kevin and I were the ones driving and we later said, as the rain was pouring down so hard that our windshield wipers going at full force barely made the road visible, that we wondered how this was going to work.

There were occasional breaks in the storm and we got some awesome views of Lake Tahoe, including Emerald Bay.

By the time we pulled into our campsite the skies were flooding down upon us. Occasionally, we saw flashes of lightening and could hear the thunder rumbling right above us. We huddled under the popup to stay dry.

When there was a break in the storm we quickly set up our tents.

We ended up getting them up just in time for the hailstorm. I have never seen hail that big in my entire life. It was the size of a nickel! Chris, Kevin and Christy were under the popup when it began and they heard it coming before it even reached our camp. Christy got video of the storm from under the shelter of the popup…
It was pretty amazing!

The hail stuck for quite a while after it stopped falling from the sky and the kids played in it and scooped it out of the beds of the trucks…

Once the hail stopped we finished setting up camp.

This goof was pretty ecstatic about being there…

Actually, all the kids were smiling despite the rain…

There was a quiet little trail behind our campsite that led down to a creek bed. The girls and I hiked down to check it out...

Tahoe is one of the most gorgeous places on the planet and if it's possible I think the clouds and the rain made everything even more stunning…

The kids ran around and rode bikes as Chris and Christy prepared dinner.

Jack picked up this log and Landon said, "hey, he's a lumber Jack…get it?!"

There was no more rain to be had and we drifted off to sleep that night to the sound of the wind rushing through the tops of the trees. It is an unparalleled sound and I personally think they should add "Tahoe wind" to every white noise app available.

More camping to come!
