Last week I picked up Landon from basketball practice & as I always do I asked him how it went. The first thing he said was, "I think I broke my fingers."
That was definitely not the response I was expecting. He explained that one of the kids on his team was messing around & when Landon bent down to pick up the ball the boy kicked his index & middle fingers. He wasn't sure if they were just jammed or if they were broken. He tried to bend them & his middle finger definitely had more range of motion than his index finger. We called Chris, who was on a business trip in San Antonio, & we all agreed that we would hold off on the ER (& the hefty bill) & make an appointment with urgent care in the morning.
Landon was upset because he didn't want to risk falling behind in school because of missed classes. He has been working incredibly hard to stay on top of all his work. I assured him that we would miss as few classes as possible.
The next morning his middle finger seemed to be back to normal but his index finger had started turning purple. He was still in a good amount of pain although he did say that part of his finger felt numb.
Disappointingly, the doctor we saw at urgent care was extremely condescending. He told us that this was just something we were going to have to get used to if Landon wanted to continue playing basketball. He went on & on about how he sees this all the time with basketball & football players. How there's really nothing to prevent this & that's why he doesn't like basketball. He patronized me further by asking if I really wanted to get x-rays. I assured him that I did want X-rays so he sent us to imaging.
Later that day I got a phone call from the very same doctor letting know that the radiologist had reviewed Landon's X-rays & low & behold, he had an avulsion fracture at the base of the middle phalanx. Even though he was still condescending on the phone it was satisfying to know that our suspicions were confirmed.
Landon has been wearing a splint & icing his finger. It's already feeling & looking much better. Sadly, he had to sit out of his first basketball tournament but we are sure that he will be back on the court soon.
