Over Spring Break we made a little day trip over to Santa Cruz to see Dominic. We hadn't been over to see him in a while and we were all looking forward to spending some time with him.
We went on a hike together which was a much needed break from technology and the busyness of the every day.
I love experiencing God's creation in all of its glory. Giant redwoods that stretch up to the sky. Dominic pointed out that the bark on a redwood tree is a natural fire retardant that protects the trees from wildfires. Isn't it awesome that God created redwoods with this natural defense mechanism? We saw the sunlight filtered through the trees. It reflected off the water of the creek and sparkled back up onto the leaves of nearby trees. There were wild flowers hidden in the shade of the trees and fiddle head ferns. I love God's use of variety and His attention to detail.

Incidentally, Remmy's other favorite thing to do with sticks is to shake when he picks the stick up off of the ground. I found this out the hard way when I was standing a little too close to him and while he was shaking. He proceeded to whack me in the shin and then the ankle with his new found stick. I swear it had to look like a bad scene from The Three Stooges.

We all crossed on this fallen tree and it reminded me of a very memorable scene from a movie that I loved as a kid, Troop Beverly Hills, where they had to cross a ravine over a giant log and not fall to their deaths. I am sure we wouldn't have fallen to our deaths because we weren't that high up but there was still some potential for injury if any of us would have fallen.

We all ended up wet after crossing the creek a few times, me more than anyone else. Apparently, my Nike's weren't the best choice of trail/creek shoes. Oh well, nothing a little time in the sun couldn't fix. No one ever said that adventuring would be a clean affair. I'm just glad I didn't end up with poison oak. It was E V E R Y W H E R E!!! We have had a running joke in our family about my propensity to break out in a rash from poison oak since Dominic and I were little kids. There was one time in particular while we were camping that Dominic fell into a poison oak plant while riding his bike. He never broke out in a rash but I did. Looking back I probably touched the oils on his clothes and that's how I was exposed. Dominic is one of the lucky ones who aren't the least bit allergic to poison oak.
