However, there are those days when the clouds and fog stick all day. The surrounding haze envelopes everything you see exposing only the very tops of the tallest trees. It is during these grey, overcast, wintry months that I often find myself in a creative rut. This is one of the reasons I have felt particularly uninspired lately.
In addition, the kids are getting older & becoming increasingly more independent. Ashlyn spends a good deal of time in her room drawing or reading. Landon can usually be found playing sports with the neighborhood kids. I truly love that they are developing their own individual interests but it ultimately means that there are less opportunities to photograph them.
When they do decide to play together it frequently involves playing Minecraft on their iPads. This type of playing "together" doesn't usually last long. Sooner or later it results in one or both of them telling the other to get out of their world and stop messing with their stuff.
Don't get me wrong, I do love that my kids will play together, even if it is just during games of Minecraft…but there are only so many pictures that you can take of your kids on their iPads.
These are just the routines that make up our daily lives. The kids do homework after school, play outside, read, listen to music on their iPods, play games on their iPads. It can feel ordinary or unremarkable but, if you look closely, there is beauty in those calm, seemingly mundane, moments.
Like when Chris is working hard in the kitchen making a meal for us…
Or when Ashlyn is practicing the piano…
The beauty is still there, if only I remember to look for it.
